Book: Guide to iPhone for Women

My company, Internet Webpages Newspaper, will release our first book in early September, "Guide to iPhone for Women."

Resource Guide and Web Directory

Guide to iPhone for Women will include a resource guide and web directory specifically for women who need to know how to get the most out of their iPhone experience. An index of Web 2.0 applications compatible with iPhone will be printed inside and updated online in a corresponding blog.

Because the book will be a full size hardcover edition, it will be perfect for sharing with friends and family or an excellent gift purchase for new iPhone users.

Photo Gallery and Profiles of Women iPhone Users

Most of the media coverage associated with iPhone's launch showed men and geeks camped out waiting in line. Women were present but few ever made it to the feature part of broadcast coverage. Guide to iPhone for Women will profile women who purchased and use iPhones along with a colorful Gallery of iPhone Women - a celebration of how females and technology intersect with the new Apple phone.

Full Color Hardover with DVD Insert

The 160-page hardcover book will be printed on glossy stock in full color with attractive dust cover and measure eight inches by 10 inches. A companion DVD will include footage from opening day at AT&T and Apple retail stores. A retail price has not been set. Online ordering will be available and shipping will be within 10 days or less depending on method of delivery. No PDF downloads will be available.

More details soon.

BlogHer Conference June 27-29 Navy Pier Chicago

BlogHer 07, "where the women bloggers are," will convene at Navy Pier in Chicago, Ill June 27-29. The conference is reasonably priced and there is a student discount (requires valid student ID).

What does this have to do with iPhone? There might be some iPhone women bloggers at the conference. Even if there isn't, the event sounds like a perfect fit for this space since it deals with women and blogging technology.

iPhone Specific Websites Launching

Apple iPhone consumers can view movie trailers designed to fit right into the viewport at a new website: http://www.apple.com/trailers/iphone. Viewing the page in Safari on your computer will send you to the regular Apple movie trailer website located here.

iPhone web guide directories should be sprouting up soon, if not already online.

Do you know of any websites created just for iPhone? Send me the link and I will publish it in my forthcoming book, "Guide to iPhone for Women."

DVD Jon Cracks iPhone for WiFi and iPod Use Without AT&T

'iPhone Independence Day' Claimed by Known Hacker DVD Jon

AT&T may not have to worry about problem activations if a crack posted to DVD Jon's blog proves to be real and popular. Consumers have complained of waiting days to activate their iPhones. Now there is a way to make the device work without AT&T, that enables both iPod and wifi functionality.

Here's what Jon has to say about this:
I’ve found a way to activate a brand new unactivated iPhone without giving any of your money or personal information to AT&T NSA. The iPhone does not have phone capability, but the iPod and WiFi work. Stay tuned!

Apple iPhone Sold Out in Illinois and California

According to Apple's iPhone website, the device is unavailable in Illinois and California. Portions of New York state have iPhones at selected Apple stores such as Albany, Buffalo and Huntington Station.

eBay and Craigslist Alternatives

eBay and Craigslist are default alternatives for those who must have an iPhone rather than wait up to four weeks for shipment from Apple suppliers. A spot check on eBay found 3,110 iPhone items listed in cell phones, with 594 items ion eBay Express.

Right about now you must be realizing why so many people stood for hours in line to get an iPhone to resell. How ridiculous it appeared on the news, people camping out overnight. Now those who have iPhones for sale can watch the price climb higher each hour Apple stock remains sold out.

You can always order from Apple's online store.

Craigslist ads in three large cities reveals the number of "iphone" listings:
  1. S.F. Bayarea (CA): 1681
  2. New York City: 1185
  3. Chicago (IL): 328

Apple Developer Connection Outlines iPhone WebDev

With hundreds of thousands of iPhones sold over the weekend, website developers must scramble and update content applications for the 3.5 inch wide screen. Apple's Developer Connection has posted details how this can be done online here.

iPhone Hackers Determined to Unlock Device

Hackers are working to open up the mystery of Apple's iPhone device according to The iPhone Dev Wiki. An image link posted reveals an iPhone in a dock full of smudges. Published reports online indicate the hackers are in a race to be the first to unlock the phone instead of working together.

Apple North Michigan Avenue Chicago Stocked Suburban Stores Empty

(Chicago) - The graphic above, if accurate, shows Apple North Michigan Avenue (NMA) as the only location with a ready supply of iPhones.

This could be due to two reasons:
  1. Apple sold out at those stores and NMA is where the action is.
  2. The projected sales of 500,000 units may be true.
Call ahead even for NMA regardless of what the dots say.

How Many Women Bought Apple iPhones? 10,000

I don't have the answer to this question. Not sure who would even know this. Nonetheless, let's speculate based on reports, surveys and news items. Ultimately, Apple will issue a statement or post the news on it's home page on the total units sold.

500,000 Units Sold

One 'analyst' report has it Apple sold 500,000 and another has 525,000. Do the math and Apple's take for a weekend is a cool $250,000,000. Quickly, think of a company that can make a quarter billion dollars in one weekend selling a new mobile phone.

Okay, so for sake of argument we agree on 500,000 sold. Now let's examine a survey that indicates interest among women for iPhone.

Harris Interactive Survey

Research conducted online by Harris Interactive(R) among 10,410 online consumers ages 13 to 64 between May 8 and 23, 2007 states the following percent of females would purchase an Apple iPhone with AT&T service:
  • Percent Females At Least Somewhat Likely - 13
  • Percent Females Somewhat Likely - 9
  • Percent Females Likely - 2
  • 2% of 500,000 = 10,000
My Calculation of Women iPhone Sales: $5M

Based on the above, I believe women consumers purchased 10,000 iPhones over the weekend. This would account for:
  • $5,000,000 in sales (10,000 x $500/phone)
  • Figure does not include any accessories or account for purchase of the higher priced 8GB iPhone
Somehow, that seems like a really small number for such a great phone.

Women Largely Absent from iPhone Checkout Line

Analyzing traffic flowing from Apple's retail store on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago suggested women were not among the throngs of gadget lovers purchasing iPhone at launch. There were women buyers but few and far between the mostly male crowd.

A quick look at the media coverage surrounding the event easily confirms this. Most all were men although many women reported about the iPhone for their networks and news channels.

The women I did see were with families (husband, kids). A few women pulled up and bought iPhones for their kids as I sat outside in a car watching late Friday.

Where are the women iPhoners? Good question.

Update: Jezebel.com's Blog has an interesting article 'The iPhone Line. Is Stupid' with more in depth coverage of missiing women from iPhone lines.
