Steve Jobs unveiled the latest version of iPhone at Apple World Wide Developer's Conference today.

6 Million Units and Counting

According to Apple six million units have been sold. With lower prices and faster 3G service Apple should do well in the next 12 months even if they did not reach 10 million in sales during the first year of iPhone mania.

Apple iPhone offers advances in enterprise support, the software developer's kit (SDK) and new features for consumers.

Background Push Notification Service Coming
Apple has figured out a way to give iPhone users background notices without sacrificing battery power. Badges, sounds, custom text messages can be received once the application quits. But this is not happening until September.

New iPhone 2.0 Software Features
A free upgrade to current iPhone users and only 10 dollars for iPod Touch owners. Available in July. Lots of new stuff too many to mention but a few are support for Cyrillic and Asian languages, bulk delete emails and saving photos from emails to your gallery.

Developer Revenue Sharing
Apple has a program for iPhone application developers giving 70 percent of revenues to them without any hosting or credit card fees for providing goodies to the App Store.

MobileMe
.Mac service is now MobileMe and subscribers will get an automatic upgrade. Cost 99 dollars a year.

Apple has dropped the price on iPhone. More people will likely purchase a two-year contract even if gas is over four bucks a gallon.

Women Control $90B in Consumer Electronic Purchases

How much influence do women have over consumer electronic purchases? $90 billion dollars worth in 2007, according to research from the Consumer Electronics Association. Women's interest in gadgets has not declined, inching up a point from 81% in 2005 to 82% today. Men are only slightly more interested, dispelling the myth women are unconcerned about technology.

On the Home Front

Adoption of consumer electronic devices are split about even at home when it comes to men and women with a minor variation. Homes occupied by women typically have televisions and cell phones whereas men adorn themselves with surround sound systems, portable digital media players, hand-held GPS devices, and in-dash CD players.

Influential Women

On average, 40% of women are comfortable making decisions themselves about the latest tech product. In addition, 21% were actively involved in making a purchase decision with their partners. As a result, 61% of women influence household consumer electronic buying, an increase of 4 percentage points from 2004 CEA research.

Women Command Nearly Half of $200B CE Market

Sales are expected to reach $200 billion this year for all CE devices, and women will contribute $90 billion spent at retail and online, or 45% of the total.

Fourth quarter sales of gadgets and technology devices will reach $48 billion dollars this year according to a recent 14th Annual CE Holiday Purchase Patterns report from the Consumer Electronics Association, an industry trade group and producer of International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Veagas, Nevada.
“Consumer electronics will be the shining star of holiday retail sales, accounting for 22 percent of all gifts given,” said CEA Economist Shawn DuBravac. “Two of the top 5 items on adults’ holiday wish lists are consumer electronics, and four of the top 5 items on the teen list are CE devices, so today’s hottest technologies will be on every holiday shopper’s mind.

Over 200 web applications are online in a new Apple.com website here. The effort brings some legitimacy to the category although Apple is not the first website directory of iPhone applications. Web apps "are websites designed specifically for the 3.5-inch screen" iPhone.

The good thing is iPhone owners have a central website they know and trust. Apple also allows developers to submit web apps and there is a link to learning how to make you own web app.

Woman Files $1 Million Lawsuit Against Apple iPhone Price Cut

Apple recently hired Oracle's top lawyer, Daniel Cooperman, who replaces Donald J. Rosenberg hired November 2006. Larry Ellison, chairman of Oracle and Steve Jobs, Apple CEO are well known friends.

Saatchi and Saatchi UK, an advertising agency within Publicis Groupe, released a study September 10 lamenting how consumer electronics retailers are missing out on $600 million by ignoring female consumers.

Highlights of the report include:

Thirty-five per cent of female internet users polled said they would increase their spending on consumer electronics if marketers and retailers thought harder about how they approach them and offered more guidance in stores and on e-commerce sites.
A staggering one in two women said they walk out of shops and leave websites without buying anything because they’re unable to find what they want.
One third of women do not feel confident enough to ask questions in stores with one respondent describing electronics retailers as reeking of a “strong scent of man”.
Almost one in three women do not consider technology advertising relevant to them and the majority of women feel disillusioned that brand owners and retailers don’t understand what they care about and don’t view them as a relevant group of customers.
Almost one in two (43%) women go shopping for consumer electronics without a specific brand or product in mind representing a massive opportunity for retailers and brand owners to reap the financial rewards if they effectively market to this group of women.
Only nine per cent of respondents think it’s important that their gadgets look feminine.

Opinion leaders and women consumers do not like to see "pink" gadgets and many feel "offended" and “patronised” by this approach. Instead they prefer "sleek and beautifully designed and packaged products."
